I have been making photographs since at least age 6. I was fortunate at a young age to study with several talented photographers who lived locally in California. While my art history studies and time at the Whitney Program moved things in intellectual and conceptual directions, I continued photographing while living in NY. I focused on the “urban landscape” documenting neighborhoods and changes around me, ultimately producing a body of work extending over many years. Some of this work was included in group shows in NYC. Starting in the 1990's, I was fortunate to travel to Japan and discovered many similar changes occurring in and around major cities there. More recently, I have returned, exploring both urban and rural Japan – the latter area is seeing accelerated change as the younger population moved to more urban locales and the remaining population ages. These latest works are an attempt to capture the unique human geography in rural Japan.
